It’s hard to realize but most emotions are held in the past. What we feel right now, is a direct result of something that had happened. I won’t tell you to stay in the “now” because I’ve realized that sometimes, that may be counterproductive, and that sometimes, it’s not possible. I don’t quite believe that staying in the “now” and focusing on the reality is always the best idea. Upon reading some Shaman articles (and starting a book), I’ve realized that there is more to life than what’s around us and inner peace. This, however, does not mean I am saying that you should not focus on the now but just know that “not thinking” and “being in the present” are not the only ways to “enlightenment”, there are others.
That being said, emotions, if recognized (as I’ve read), are emotions from the past. If you feel it, and you recognize it, it’s an old emotion associated with something in the past. Let’s say you have a fear of bugs, when you see one, a fear grips you like never before, you become paralyzed, and you KNOW this feeling. You know the feeling of helplessness, you know the feeling of fear, of paralysis, and the general feeling that you can’t do anything about this. This feeling, now that you recognize it, is old. It’s based on something in the past, where that fear, those feelings come from. They are not present, they are memories of something that had happened. To relieve yourself of those feelings, you either have to stay completely in the present and abolish past from who you are, OR deal with the event that happened in the past that triggered these feelings in the first place.
